FOOD AID FOR BOSNIA a WomenAid/UNHCR/Sunday Express Urgent Appeal, 18.04.1993.
UN food convoys were halted because the Metkovic warehouse holding supplies for central Bosnia was completely empty. Sadako Ogata, High Commissioner for Refugees appealed for help saying “The present shortage of resources puts the refugees’ lives at further risk.”
“After months of wondering what we can do, there is a practical way to help the refugees. Please send a donation which will help buy food and medical supplies for these desperate people.”

NB: The appeal raised £66,500 which was transferred to UNHCR on 30.04.1993 to purchase 450 tonnes wheat flour.

The appeal was launched by Dame Judi Dench and Geoffrey Palmer of the TV comedy As Time Goes By. The Sunday Express teamed up with charity WomenAid, which is distributing 8.000 tonnes of ‘energy’ biscuits worth £7 million, donated by the Ministry of Agriculture.

In addition to mobilising food aid, WomenAid has also provided considerable quantities of medical supplies and equipment including over one million doses of antibiotics and half a ton of x-ray film.
